What is considered the place of insurance?
The insured location is your apartment or shared room. This also includes a lockable basement, balconies, terraces directly adjoining the building, and rooms in outbuildings – including garages – on the property where the insured apartment is located. Rooms used exclusively for professional or commercial purposes, such as a home office, are not considered part of the apartment.
Is simple theft also covered by the insurance?
No, because if you leave your front door open and a burglar takes everything, you are responsible for the damage. The same applies if you leave your smartphone on a table in a café and someone steals it.
Does the household insurance also cover the dormitory?
Depending on the provider, household insurance also covers you in student dormitories and provides insurance protection for your belongings. However, it's important that your room is lockable.
Is my bicycle also insured if I leave it locked up outside?
Yes, if you include a bicycle clause in your contract. Depending on how much you want to insure your bicycle, you select an individual sum insured here.
What is the maximum insurance coverage in the event of a claim?
The sum insured is individually agreed upon, depending on the value of your household contents. It is generally advisable to agree on a so-called waiver of underinsurance. This involves agreeing on a flat sum insured (usually €650 per square meter) based on the living space. In the event of a claim, you will then be reimbursed up to the sum insured.
From when can I access the services?
Your student household insurance coverage begins on the date specified in your policy. As soon as you receive your policy, you can access the benefits. (There are no waiting periods.) You can select your desired policy start date during the application process.
What do I need to do in case of damage? Who do I need to contact?
In case of damage, inform your home contents insurance company immediately. After a burglary or the theft of your bicycle, a police report and a list of the missing or damaged items are necessary. Invoices and photos can help with the claims process.
What about my household belongings that I take with me when I travel?
In principle, your household contents are also insured outside your apartment or shared accommodation, e.g. in hotels, through the external insurance.
I'm a high school graduate. Does the student household insurance cover me?
Yes, the student household insurance rates also apply to school pupils.
Am I insured during my semester abroad?
Within the European Union, you are generally insured for a maximum of two years up to the sum insured. Otherwise, the so-called "off-premises" coverage applies. You should carefully review the terms and conditions of your home contents insurance policy.

I've heard something about underinsurance. What does that mean for me?
With an underinsurance waiver clause, you will be fully compensated up to the agreed sum insured in the event of a claim. Without a waiver of underinsurance, you would only receive partial compensation if, in the event of a claim, it turns out that your household contents are worth more than insured. Costs for preventing or mitigating damage, cleanup costs, costs for investigating or documenting the damage, fire extinguishing costs, and security costs are reimbursed up to 10 percent above the sum insured. (see § 2)
What are the notice periods for cancelling my insurance policy?
You can cancel your insurance coverage by adhering to the notice period agreed upon in your contract, effective at the end of the insurance period.
Why does a student actually need home contents insurance?
First, you should check whether you might be covered under your parents' so-called "external coverage" if they have a home contents insurance policy. If not, home contents insurance becomes important if replacing your belongings in the event of damage would exceed your personal financial means. Home contents insurance is also advisable if you live in a shared apartment. For example, if the washing machine breaks down and water leaks out, the apartment quickly becomes a furnished swimming pool. The result: many things are suddenly unusable, and replacements are correspondingly expensive.
