Riding a hoverboard – do you need insurance for that?
Skating around without any motor assistance used to sound like something out of the future, but now the fantastic hoverboard is here! It's not just popular with kids, but also with teenagers, students, and even adults. But what about insurance? Do you need insurance for a hoverboard, or is there even any? We have the answers (as always).
What exactly is a hoverboard?
You've probably seen them around before, but a brief overview of hoverboards can't hurt. They are self-stabilizing, two-wheeled vehicles consisting of a platform and two side-mounted wheels. Hoverboards are controlled by shifting your body weight. In terms of balance, propulsion, steering, and braking technology, they are best compared to Segways – however, this doesn't mean that the Segway mobility aid regulations, which provide the legal framework for Segway use, also apply to hoverboards.
Hoverboards are not allowed in public spaces
Anyone who thinks a hoverboard can be used in the same way as, for example, a skateboard or a Segway, is mistaken: In public spaces, such as streets, playgrounds, parks, or similar areas, they are not permitted or are even illegal. In Germany, hoverboards are classified as motorized vehicles because they can reach speeds between 6 and 20 km/h. Furthermore, due to the lack of features like lights or a horn, they are considered unsafe for road use.
So if you get caught riding a hoverboard, you risk a fine and a point on your driving record.
allmaxx tip: Insurance for hoverboards
If you use your hoverboard in a public space and an accident occurs in which other people or property are damaged, your private liability insurance will not cover the costs . However, liability insurance does apply on your private property. If you are now considering taking out separate insurance specifically for hoverboards to be covered in public spaces, we regret to inform you that there is currently no such insurance available .
Oh, and for everyone who claims hoverboards are just for kids: To use one of these self-propelled boards, you need a driver's license. However, the law isn't sure which motorcycle category it falls under. Possibilities include AM, A1, A2, or B. So, anyone riding one in public without a license is also committing a criminal offense under Section 21 of the German Road Traffic Act (StVG).
