What is pet liability insurance?
Essentially, pet liability insurance is the same as regular liability insurance – only it applies to animals. If your dog, cat, or guinea pig causes damage to other people or their property, the insurance covers the costs. Disputes are rare, since animals cannot be accused of acting intentionally; therefore, the chances are very good that the insurance company will provide the desired coverage. An exception would be, of course, if a dog owner deliberately sets their pet on someone. In this case, the insurance company would pay out, but would then seek reimbursement from the policyholder.
Which animals require pet liability insurance?
Not every animal requires separate liability insurance – however, for some it is mandatory. The following list provides a good overview:
- Pets such as cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds, etc. are covered under your normal private liability insurance.
- You need special animal liability insurance for dogs and horses, as you have to bear the costs yourself in case of damage.
- Even exotic animals like snakes and lizards should be insured with pet liability insurance.
- If costs are caused by the animal, the dog or horse liability insurance will cover them.
- In nine German states, there is a legal obligation to have insurance for dangerous dogs.
- In six German states, there is a legal obligation to have insurance for all dog breeds: Berlin, Hamburg, Lower Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, Schleswig-Holstein, Thuringia.
- There is no compulsory insurance in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
When is pet liability insurance recommended?
If your dog or horse is frequently found outside your property, the likelihood of it causing damage to people or property increases. This risk is particularly high with dogs, as you have to walk them several times a day. Therefore, dog or horse liability insurance is highly recommended.
How much does pet liability insurance cost?
For example, there are good liability insurance policies for fighting dogs for less than 100 euros per year; non-listed dogs can be insured even more cheaply. If you have more than one dog, there are often discounts for each additional pet.
